柔らかくて温かい、人とコートのストーリー
まるでカシミヤのようになめらかな手触りとふわりと軽い着心地。袖を通せば優しく包まれるように温かい。ラムウールの中でも、最高峰と言われるジーロンラムウールを使用した、“emmi史上最も上質なコート”が誕生した。
「クリアモード」をコンセプトに、トレンドを取り入れながらもその時代に沿ったファッションスタイルを提案してきたemmi。サステナブルな素材や機能素材を使用してウェルビーイングを追求してきたブランドでもある。「新たなものを生み出すのであれば、『長く愛される一着』を作りたい。それこそが、今回の大きなテーマでした」そう語るのは、emmiチーフデザイナーの有吉直子氏だ。
ここ数年は温暖化の影響もあり、ぶ厚く重たいコートは歓迎されない傾向がありました。そこで、上質感がありながらもさらりと着られるような、今の時代にマッチした一着が作れないだろうかと考えました」。
思い描いたのは、飽きのこないベーシックなウールコート。軽やかで着心地の良い理想の素材を求めるなかで出会ったのが、ジーロンラムウールだった。ジーロンラムは、オーストラリアの南、ヴィクトリア州・ジーロン地区でのみ生産される羊毛で、その繊維の細さと優れた白度が特徴だ。「通常のウール繊維が23~30ミクロン程度の太さに対し、このラムウールは、16.5ミクロンと非常に細く、そのためカシミヤのようになめらかな手触りに仕上がります」

With the concept of “clear mode,” emmi has consistently delivered trend-conscious yet era-defining fashion styles. The brand has also been at the forefront of sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly and functional materials to promote well-being. “When creating something new, we aim for a piece that will be loved for years to come. That was our main vision for this project,” explains emmi’s Chief Designer, Naoko Ariyoshi.
“In recent years, due in part to global warming, there has been a shift away from bulky and heavy coats. This prompted us to explore the possibility of creating a coat that would match the current times, have a high-quality feel, and be worn lightly.”
Our vision was a timeless, basic wool coat. In our search for the ideal material, lightweight and comfortable to wear, we discovered Geelong lambswool. Produced exclusively in the Geelong region of Victoria, in the south of Australia, Geelong lambswool is characterized by its fine fibers and superior whiteness. “Compared to regular wool fibers with a thickness of 23-30 microns, this lambswool boasts an ultra-fine 16.5 microns, resulting in a cashmere-like softness.”

ウールを加工するのは、イタリアのビエラ地方と並び、世界の二大毛織物産地とも呼ばれる愛知県の尾州・一の宮市にある工場だ。熟練した技術で、ジーロンラムウールの良さを最大限に引き出し、触れるとわかる「カシミアタッチ」を作り出す。実際に工場を見学したという有吉氏が、その工程について話してくれた。「羊毛は丁寧に加工処理が施された後、織り上げられますが、それには気温や水温を緻密に調整するなど長年の
経と高い技術が必要とされます。工場で働く職人さんは、『ウールは生き物』だと言っていました」上質な生地を作る上での一番の決め手が、「起毛」と「剪毛(カット)」だ。無数の針のついた機械で生地表面に緻密な毛を掻き出してふっくらとした風合いを出したら、さらに、その毛をカッターで均一に整え、滑らかさや艶を与えるのだという。「言葉の通り、羊毛は自然のもの。毎年同じ仕上がりというわけにはいかず、理想の風合いや手触りを求めて何度も調整を繰り返しました」
ブローカーの研ぎ澄まされた目利きと、日本が世界に誇る毛織物の技術、そこに関わる多くの人の信念や想いが集まって、一着のコートが仕上がると、有吉氏は語る。「背景にある物語を知ると、改めて長く大切に着たい思うんです」

This premium lambswool, favored by many renowned fashion brands, is not readily available to everyone. The Geelong region, long renowned for its wool industry, is still home to many of the world’s most discerning brokers, who conduct transactions based solely on trust with buyers. “This time, we were fortunate to procure lambswool carefully selected by a seasoned broker, considered a legend in the region, based on the quality of the fleece.”
The wool is processed in a factory in Aichi Prefecture’s Ichinomiya (Bishu) City, a region renowned alongside Italy’s Biella comune as one of the world’s two major wool textile hubs. Here, skilled artisans employ their expertise to extract the finest qualities of Geelong lambswool, creating a cashmere-like touch that is evident to the hand. Ariyoshi, who had the opportunity to visit the factory firsthand, shared insights into the process: “The wool undergoes meticulous
processing and treatment before being woven into fabric. This requires years of experience and refined techniques,
including precise adjustments to temperature and water conditions. As one of the craftsmen at the factory remarked, ‘Wool is a living thing.’”
The key to creating high-quality fabric lies in two crucial steps: “raising” and “shearing (cutting).” Once the dense hairs are raised from the surface of the fabric using a machine with countless needles to create a fluffy texture, the hairs are then trimmed evenly with a cutter to give the fabric its smoothness and luster. “Wool is a natural material. The outcome cannot be identical each year. In pursuit of the ideal texture and feel, we repeatedly fine-tuned the process”
“When a coat is completed, it represents the culmination of the discerning eye of the broker, the world-renowned wool textile technology of Japan, and the beliefs and passion of the many people involved in the process,” says Ariyoshi. “Learning the story behind it only deepens your desire to cherish it for a long time.”

コートのデザインは3型。マニッシュなチェスター風のロング丈、上品でありながらemmiらしいカジュアルさも兼ね備えたフード付きのミドル丈、ショート丈はジップデザインでトレンド感を意識した。「ウール混率90%なので、軽いのにしっかりと温かい。ちくちくしない柔らかな手触りもロイヤルジーロンウールならではだと感じます」ブランドの他アイテムとの相性も考えたカラーバリエーションも魅力だ。「さらりと羽織れる軽いコートは、アクティブに、そして心地よく過ごしたいと願う、この時代の女性にこそふさわしい一着です」
